Walking bases

Best static caravan parks for walkers and outdoor weekends

For walkers, a holiday home works best when it removes friction. Leave the boots there, arrive Friday night and start walking Saturday morning. The clever purchase is not necessarily the park with the most facilities, but the one closest to the places you keep wanting to walk.

A swimming pool is nice. A footpath beginning near the caravan has considerably fewer opening hours.

North Wales · Aberdunant Hall

Aberdunant Hall Holiday Park

Aberdunant Hall is a woodland holiday park near Porthmadog aimed more at peace, walking and access to Eryri than big-resort entertainment. It sells both static caravans and holiday lodges, with new, used and some private-owner stock advertised through the park.

Published starting point

The park currently advertises static caravans from £27,995, with higher-specification models extending well into six figures.

A woodland park should feel like a woodland park. If the sales tour is the quietest hour you ever spend there, that is useful information.

What matters

What we would compare before viewing

  • Access to real walking routes without a long drive first
  • Drying space, parking and practical storage
  • Journey time from home for short walking weekends
  • How quiet the park is early in the morning and late at night
  • Whether premium resort facilities are adding cost without adding value

Own & Roam view

Shortlist first, buy later

The best walking base is the one that gets used. A spectacular park four hours too far away is mostly an expensive screensaver.
